授業の目的 |
This class is to examine basic English concepts in political studies by encouraging students to refine their reading comprehension as well as their discussion and presentation skills.
Students are, through this class, expected: 1. To be able to read through introductory English textbook on political studies. 2. To be able to make a discussion and a presentation on basic political issues. 3. To deepen one’s understandings of political concepts in English.

Contents: 1. Why despots don’t belong in politics 2. The classical Greeks: How to be a citizen 3. The Romans: The real meaning of patriotism 4. Christianity and the rise of the individual 5. Constructing the modern state 6. How to analyse a modern society 7. Relations between states: How to balance power 8. The experience of politics: I. How to be an activist 9. The experience of politics: II. Parties and doctrines 10. The experience of politics: III. Justice, freedom, and democracy 11. Studying politics scientifically 12. Ideology challenges politics 13. Can politics survive the twenty-first century?

授業の進め方 |
- The lecture of this class is provided basically in English with a little help of Japanese. - Students are required to read one chapter (10 pages or less) before each session. - Should you find unfamiliar words in the textbook, consult your dictionary before the class. - It is advised that students should bring your own dictionary to the lecture room. - Every session has a quiz.
