No prior knowledge of linguistics is required or expected.
授業の目的
The purposes of this class are:
(1)to introduce students to general and linguistic vocabulary;
(2)to improve the students’ reading comprehension (読解向上);
(3)to improve the students’ summarizing skills (要約能力向上);
(4)to encourage students to discuss issues related to the contents of the text read during the class.

授業の概要・計画
This is a preliminary class schedule. This means that this schedule is subject to change. The pace of the classes will, to some extent, be adapted to fit the level of the students. This may cause changes to the class schedule below.

PART 1
Class 1:Introductory Class
Class 2-3:The Inevitability of Change
Class 4-5:Collecting Evidence of Language Change
Class 6-7:Studying Language Change in Progress
Class 8:MID-TERM TEST (中期テスト)

PART 2
Class 8-9:Conscious and Unconscious Change: New York City and Martha’s Vineyard
Class 10-11:Opposing Social Pressures Driving Language Change
Class 12-13:How Sound Changes Spread through a Language

PART 3 (Revision Class)
Class 14:Progress or Decay? Assessing the Situation
Class 15:FINAL EXAMINATION (期末試験)

NOTE:The exact date of the mid-term test (中期テスト) will be announced well in advance.

授業の進め方
1. Before the Class / 授業の前
Reading materials will be handed out at least one week in advance. Students are expected to complete the assigned readings before attending the class.

2. During the Class / 授業中
During the class, students are expected:
(1) to read aloud one or more paragraphs of the assigned reading material;
(2) to answer questions concerning the contents of the paragraph(s) read aloud.

教科書・参考書等
The following book will be used during the class:

AITCHISON, JEAN. (2001). Language Change: Progress or Decay? [言語変化 − 進歩か、それとも衰退か], 3rd edition (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press).

This work remains non-technical in style. Therefore, it is accessible to students with no previous knowledge of linguistics.

NOTE: Students do not need to buy Aitchison’s book. Reading materials will be handed out at least one week in advance.

成績評価の方法・基準
Assessment (成績評価) will be conducted as follows:
(1)class preparation and class participation (授業予習及び授業参加): 40%
(2)mid-term test (中期テスト): 30%
(3)final examination (期末試験): 30%
