授業の目的
This course encourages students to improve on their English vocabulary (general as well as law-related vocabulary), reading and communication skills while reading and discussing issues related to Japanese and international law. It will cover various fields of Japanese, German, Anglo-American and European Union law to enable students to get a basic understanding of how law works on national as well as on international levels in different social and legal cultures.
This class aims especially at those students who are interested in studying in English and have an interest in foreign cultures and countries and would like to broaden their horizons to an international level. It is especially suitable and drafted for students who want to study abroad or work internationally.
授業の概要・計画
The classes will be based on two blocks, one block on Japanese law, the other one on foreign laws, and comprise especially the following topics:
Block 1:
 ● History of Modern Japanese Law
 ● The Japanese Constitution
 ● The Legal Profession in Japan
 ● Overview of the Judicial System in Japan
Block 2:
 ● Overview of German Private Law
 ● Overview of Key Differences Between Anglo-American and Continental European Legal Systems
 ● Lawyers and the Law
 ● Overview of the European Union
授業の進め方
The course will be taught mainly in English with some Japanese explanations if/where necessary. Students are required to study short articles and/or book chapters (in average five pages a week) which will then be read by the students in class. Issues covered by the reading materials will then be analyzed and discussed together. Students are strongly encouraged to raise questions and participate in conversation. Class participation will have an influence on the final score.
教科書・参考書等
Reading materials will be handed out one class in advance.
成績評価の方法・基準
Credits will be given on the basis of class participation (30%) and a take-home-exam at the end of the semester (70%). Details on the exam will follow in the first class. Attendance is compulsory. Students who miss more than 2 classes fail.

This class requires a TOEFL score of at least 477 (PBT)/ 153 (CBT) / 53 (iBT) or extraordinarily high motivation.

Students with no interest in studying in English are kindly asked to choose a different class.
