Each week, students will be given an edited version of a recent decision of an English court. In class, we will read the courtfs decision and discuss it together.

The court decisions that we study will be from different fields of law. All of the cases will be so-called ghard casesh, meaning that they involve a complicated mixture of legal and moral issues.

The following is a list of the cases we will discuss in the first two weeks of the class:

Case 1: The case of gJodie and Maryh. Jodie are Mary are conjoined twins (Œ‹‡‚ต‚ฝ‘oŽq). The doctors want to separate the baby twins, but the parents refuse to consent to the operation. The parents are Christian and believe it would be a sin to separate Jodie and Mary. The hospital applies to the court for permission to separate the twins. The court must decide whether to allow separation of the twins, against the wishes of the parents.

Case 2: The case of gMrs Prettyh. Mrs Pretty is terminally ill and wants to commit suicide. Unfortunately, she needs the assistance of her husband to kill herself, as her illness prevents her from moving. However, assisted suicide is a crime in English law. If he helps her, then it is a crime and he could be sent to prison for up to 7 years. The husband – Mr Pretty - asks the court for permission to help his wife in ending her life.

The cases for later classes will be decided based on the interests and English language skills of the students.
