授業の概要・授業計画
The purpose of this course is to examine post-1945 Japanese history with a focus on the country’s constitutional pacifism. The course will look at the historical and political backgrounds of the war-renouncing constitution, and explore the impacts of the pacifist principles on domestic and international affairs. What does it mean to be a pacifist nation in international society? How has the constitutional pacifism affected Japanese national policy and society? Is the pacifist spirit realistic in the conduct of foreign policy? Should the Japanese stick to the pacifist constitution? The course will begin with an introductory session explaining pacifism in light of major theories of international relations, followed by an overview of key classical peace plans. The course will then examine how the Japanese constitution was drawn up and how its pacifist principles have evolved against the backdrop of the development in international politics. At the end of the course, we will discuss Japan’s role in the 21st century international society.
