授業の目的 |
This course aims to give students a better understanding of the current circumstances and conflicts in the Middle East. |
授業の概要・授業計画 |
This course studies the background to current global issues arising from the Middle East, such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the Iranian nuclear issue, terrorism by Islamic extremists and the emergence of “Islamic State.” After learning the basic principles of Islam and its historical development, students will be introduced to ordinary Muslims’ lives and halal business. Halal business is a new field to which Japanese companies have recently been paying much attention in order to attract Muslim tourists and to sell Japanese products and services to Islamic countries. Major political trends in the Middle East – nationalism and anti-colonialism movements, Islamist movements, struggles toward democratization and terrorism by Islamic extremists – will then be discussed. The Iranian nuclear agreement reached on July 14, 2015 led to a historical reconciliation between Iran and the US, but it also dealt a shock to the post-Soviet regional order and caused new conflicts in the region. Students will be expected to choose one subject discussed in the course, make a short presentation on that subject, and then submit a term paper by the end of the course.
