授業の目的
The course aims to provide an overall picture of US politics, society and history through the recent US presidential campaign and its impacts on international affairs.
授業の概要・授業計画
This course examines the US presidential election, its domestic backdrop and its impacts on international relations. The Donald Trump phenomenon and the Bernie Sanders revolution emerged during the US primaries and Hillary Clinton changed her trade policy, while the Philippines’ and the UK’s “Donald Trumps” won favor with populist movements. It is important to know these dynamics and how the year-long US presidential campaign and the November US presidential election affect international affairs.

The course is divided into three parts. The first part discusses historical presidential campaigns and events and then looks at presidential campaigns today. The second part covers key social and economic factors: demographic changes in race and ethnicity, social media and mass media, and economic disparities. This part also covers the latest salient issues pertaining to anti-globalization, populist movements and challenges to democracies. Finally, the last part discusses the election’s expected impacts on other countries/regions – Japan, China, the ROK, ASEAN, the Middle East, etc. – and compares the election with those in other political systems and societies.

Students will choose a country (most likely their home country) and offer a class presentation for discussion. Students will be expected to actively participate in discussions during the course, to submit a mid-term paper by Day 4 and to make a short final presentation on the subject of that paper.
