Admission into the BiP (LL.M.) Program
Eligibility
For admission to BiP, students must meet the following requirements:
- An undergraduate degree in either Law OR Japanese/East Asian Studies.
- A good command of oral, written and reading Japanese. Although there is no formal Japanese language requirement, an interview will be conducted with all candidates to ensure that students have the ability to fully participate in courses taught in Japanese. In addition, students will be obliged to submit a personal statement written in Japanese as part of the application process.
- A good command of English. A TOEFL score of 213+ (computer-based), 550+ (paper-based), or 79+ (internet-based) or equivalent is required for non-native English speakers.
- Sufficient financial support for the duration of the program.
Application Deadline & Procedure
For the 2009-10 BiP, the deadline for applications will be May 31st 2009.
Candidates will be interviewed by phone (or, if is convenient, in person) in early June 2009 and informed of the result of their application by the end of June. Successful candidates are expected to arrive in Japan between October 1-7, 2009.
Tuition Fees
For the academic year 2009-2010, tuition fees will total around ¥900,000. The final amount is available upon request after it is confirmed in Jan. 2009. A fee waiver scheme operates for students demonstrating a high level of academic performance.
Accomodation & Other Expenses
All students enrolled in the program will be provided with subsidized accommodation at Kyushu University International House for one year (with a possibility of a 6-12 month extension). In 2007-8, the costs of the accommodation were (excluding utilities) as follows:
(1) Single room: ¥5,900 per month; (2) Double occupancy: ¥11,900 - ¥13,200 per month; (3) Family occupancy: ¥14,200 - ¥15,500 per month.
Depending on usage, the cost of utilities (i.e. gas, electricity and water) is estimated to total ¥5-10,000 per month.
