Law and Development in Asia
Editors: Gerald Paul McAlinn and Caslav Pejovic
“This book fills a gap in the literature by presenting a comprehensive overview of the key issues relating to law and development in Asia. Over recent decades, experts in law and development have produced multiple theories on law and development, none of which were derived from close study of Asian countries, and none of which fit very well with the existing evidence of how law actually functioned in these countries during periods of rapid economic development. The book discusses the different models of law and development, including both the developmental state model of the 1960s and the neo-liberal model of the 1980s, and shows how development has worked out in practice in relation to these models in a range of Asian countries.”
Faculty Contribution: Prof. Ago (From Social Clause to CSR), Prof. Pejovic (Japanese Long-Term Employment), Assoc. Prof. Van Uytsel (China’s Antimonopoly Law)

News Flash:
- Fukuoka City ranks #16 in Monocle's 2009 Top 20 Most Livable Cities in the World
The Financial Times and Monocle Magazine recently published a league table of the most livable cities in the world, and Fukuoka was able to land on the #16th spot, the 2nd highest ranking given to a Japanese City, and the 4th highest for an Asian City after Tokyo (#3), Melbourne (#9), and Sydney (#13). This is the 2nd consecutive time that Fukuoka has recognized since Monocle Magazine started with the "best city" listing in 2007. Fukuoka was previously ranked 17th in the 2008 list. A qoute in the Monocle Magazine's article which conducted the research, states that;
“If I wanted the best of Japan but also great connections to the rest of Asia then it would be my first choice.”
"Fukuoka edges ahead because of its great connections and easy living. Fukuoka is so far from Tokyo - nearly 900km - that it has long since learnt to resist the pull towards the Japanese capital."
