Professor Lawan is an established legal scholar having completed her LL.B. (1978) and LL.M. in International Law (1985) at Thammasat University, Thailand. In 1988, she obtained her LL.M. in International Comparative Law and European Law Studies at Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium. She obtained a Ph.D. in International Economic Law at Lancaster University, United Kingdom in 1999.

Her academic interests led her to pursue an extensive research experience at various institutions such as UNIDROIT (Rome, Italy), Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore), Commission of the European Union (Brussels, Belgium), UNCTAD (Geneva, Switzerland), WTO (Geneva, Switzerland), and Institute of Research and Development (Thailand). She was likewise awarded a certificate by The Hague Academy of International Law in International Law (2001) and the Chulalongkorn University in Business Analysis (1993).

Dr. Lawan has also shared her expertise in International Legal Studies and International Economic Law as a visiting professor at various universities and
government organizations such as Kyushu University, Duke University, Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Eastern Asia University, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Western University, Chaopaya University, Bangkok University, International Institute for Trade and Development, Rajamakala University and Kirk University. Soon, she will also join the Doctoral Degree Committee of George Madison University.
