Research Grant on Flying Cars |
January 13, 2022 |
Professor Ryu Kojima, Director of the International Programs in Law was recently awarded a sizeable research grant by the Japan Science and Technology Agency as part of their Responsible Innovation with Conscience and Agility program.
The focus of the project is to examine legal and ethical issues around urban air mobility or “flying cars.” The movement toward the social implementation of flying cars is accelerating, but, in the current discussion, there is a lack of fundamental consideration of social institutional design and questions around the social acceptability of a situation where flying cars are widely used. For flying cars to spread in society, overcoming technological challenges such as low energy load and infrastructure construction will be essential. In addition, however consideration of the various legal and ethical issues created by such technologies is also essential. Without addressing and solving these complex normative and social questions, flying cars will not be accepted as a means of transportation that contributes to our well-being in a socially responsible and sustainable manner.
In this project, researchers from the humanities and social sciences are collaborating to clarify some of the ethical, legal, and social challenges that must be overcome as a prerequisite for the successful implementation of flying cars as a social infrastructure.
The research period is from October 2021 to March 2025 and involves a multi-disciplinary team comprising researchers from the following institutions.

Kyushu University, a) collaborative platform in Research and Education on Humanities and Social Science, specialized fields of humanities, human environment, economics, and law. b) I²CNER: International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research c) Graduate School and Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering |

Message for Incoming Students |
August 10, 2021 |
As a result of the ongoing disruption caused by the pandemic, we are expecting some delays in the arrival in Japan for many students accepted for our programs starting from October 2021. |
Therefore, classes will be taught remotely or using some form of "hybrid" model in which we combine in-class and remote teaching. In making decisions about the operation of the program from October, we need to consider various factors, including university and government policy. However, we will ensure that student needs are accommodated, even if it is not possible to arrive in Japan for the start of the program. |
We hope you understand that a final decision cannot be made at this time. We will, however, notify you as soon as any decisions are made and, in the meantime, ask for your understanding and continued patience. |

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Japan. |
