Private International Law and Civil Ligtigation, Law and Culture
Toshiyuki Kono is Professor of Private International Law. His main research fields are in the fields of private international law, international civil litigation, and heritage law. Recent research includes international enforcement of intellectual property rights and litigation and the economic analysis of the conflict of laws. He served as a member of the experts' group to draft the Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and was a member of the Japanese Delegation and Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression. He was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of ICOMOS in 2011 as a vice president in 2014 and then as its president in 2017. In this capacity, he has been actively involved in the evaluation of nomination files for World Cultural Heritage. He has also dealt extensively with issues on the control of illicit traffic of cultural property, as well. He has also been assisting the Bhutanese Government in their draft heritage law. As for his teaching activities, Professor Kono holds a seminar and lecture
on private international law in the law school, international civil litigation for the LL.M course, as well as a tutorial seminar for graduate students. In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Reimar Lüst Award for International Scholarly and Cultural Exchange, which recognizes scholars in the areas of humanities and social science whose outstanding contributions have strengthened the relationship between their home countries and Germany.
