Benoit ALLEMEERSCH

Benoit Allemeersch is a tenured law professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and a visiting professor at the University of Hasselt (both in Belgium). He studied law at the law schools of Leuven, Duke and Yale. Since 2006 he teaches general principles of procedural law as well as European civil procedure in Leuven and Hasselt, and previously also in Brussels. He holds a Dr.Jur. from Leuven and has since 1999 focused his research on the law of evidence and civil procedure. Procedural mechanisms for collective redress have been an important element in his research focus. In the context of his work on collective litigation, he appeared as an expert before the Belgian Parliament and subsequently acted as special advisor on collective actions to the Belgian Minister of Justice during 2009 and 2010. In that capacity, he was closely involved in the Belgian initiatives to introduce a class action in its civil justice system. In addition, as counsel with the law firm Clifford Chance in its Brussels office, Benoit Allemeersch has had significant experience in conducting complex and collective litigation both in Belgium and the United States.
